Here Goes Nothing…

Is anyone else as excited as I am about the possibilities that arrive with a new year?  It’s a brand-new chance to get a fresh start and begin another journey in life.  I feel full of energy – who’s with me?

Every year, I make a resolution list – a HUGE list – of all the things I hope to accomplish and/or want to change about myself.  I guess I feel like if I can cross those things off, I will have a chance to be more like the person I want to be.

But this year needs to be different.  So many changes are buzzing around me…I feel the need to shake things up a little bit.  I want to try something new and positive, something more motivating than a simple to-do list.  So let’s try a little social experiment!  Who doesn’t love those?  Take a person out of their element, or let them try a new way of life, and see what happens.  They can be funny, moving, enlightening…I hope mine will hit at least one of those three!

So, here’s my plan:  I’m going to try new things.  Quite a few new things – 52 of them, to be exact.  I’m going to try one new thing or habit every week of 2011.  Some of them will be easy, some uncomfortable, some might push me completely out of my comfort zone.  But that’s kind of the point.  And I’m going to call these potentially disagreeable weekly tasks my 52 FEATS.

Here are a few ideas for Feats:

Strike up a conversation with a stranger every day.

Keep a food journal.

Have sex every day (my husband really wants me to lead with that one…we’ll see).

Don’t buy anything for the entire week.

Meditate every day.

There may be some Feats that I can’t fully complete in a week, like taking a class or training to run a 5K (yeah, not so sure about that last one no matter how much time I give myself).  For those Feats, they’ll be assigned a particular week where I introduce them, and I’ll just keep you posted as I continue to tackle them.

The Feats I want to try each week aren’t going to be silly or trivial.  I want them to be things that really encourage me to break out of my shell, to develop a good habit, or to break a bad one.  Hopefully, some of these things will stick with me – wouldn’t that be great?  (Mental note:  I’m going to have to do a “floss teeth” week.  Enough said.)

And you, dear reader, are invited to accompany me on this journey.  Even if you don’t do every Feat with me, you can pick and choose some along the way.  Then let me know how it worked out for you!

Oh, and I’m definitely going to need some more Feat ideas.  (Obviously, nothing dangerous or harmful to me or anyone else.)  Leave me a comment or send me an email with your suggestions.

I’m scared and excited.  Once I put this out there, there’s no going back.  I’m committing an entire year to you, and to working on this experiment!  Feat #1 will be posted shortly, and I’ll update the blog throughout the week to let you know how it’s going.

    Jen, I think this is a fabulous idea. I’m going to try and do some of them with you too! You’re not alone in feeling the energy shifting and changing! This is going to be a great year full of change for many many people! Good luck and I can’t wait to read more about your experiences!
