The ABC’s of Breastfeeding

8 Sep

This is a favorite topic at the La Leche League meeting. By no means is it a COMPLETE list of the benefits of breastfeeding, but instead, it offers a taste, if you will, of the many positive aspects!

Allergies– Babies/children who are breastfed tend to have fewer allergies than formula-fed babies.
Bond– Babies/toddlers who are breastfed tend to be bonded to their mothers. This bond is increased when moms wear their babies (and nursing while baby wearing is even better!).
Cancer– Breastfeeding reduces a mom’s risk of several different types of cancer.
Diabetes– Women who nurse exclusively for even one month reduce their own risk of becoming diabetic.
Environment– Nursing is environmentally friendly! There is no packaging going into landfills, no water needed, no plastics, etc.
FREE!! You could save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars by nursing!
Gift– What better gift to provide your newborn baby!
Happy babies, Healthy babies– Breast milk is easier on a baby’s underdeveloped GI tract than formula.
Intelligence– Breast milk increases a child’s IQ.
Jaundice– The more breast milk going in, the more quickly the bilirubin levels go down.
Keeps baby hydrated.
Lighten up– Moms burn 500-600 extra calories a day simply by breastfeeding!
Menstruation– Breastfeeding temporarily stops moms from menstruating. For some lucky moms, it can last more than one year!
Nourishment– Breast milk is ALL a baby needs for a minimum of the first 6 months.
Obesity– Breastfed babies are less likely to become obese.
Prolactin– Breastfeeding causes mom’s body to release prolactin, which is the “love hormone.”
Quenches thirst– Especially the foremilk.
Relaxing– Nursing provides a time (for those of us with more than one, this may be the ONLY time in your day) to sit down, prop your feet up, relax, and just be with your baby/child.
Savory– Breast milk is flavored by what moms eat, so if mom eats a wide variety of food flavors, baby gets to experience that variety too.
Teeth– Breastfed babies get fewer dental caries than formula-fed babies.
Unbelievable– Did you know that the baby’s saliva sends signals which mom’s areola receives and forwards to her brain which tells her brain which antibodies baby needs when baby is sick?
Vacation– You can take your breasts anywhere!
Weight Management– For mom. Breastfeeding triggers mom’s uterus to shrink up after birth.
No eXpiration Date– You can nurse as long as you and your child are comfortable. Breastmilk does not expire (as long as it’s inside of your body) and it never stops being nutritive.
Yummy– Babies love it!
Zoetic– Before formula, it was vital to human existence!
